Mnemosyne submersed or drown? An area of 1784km2 was flooded in the state of Goias, Brazil, for the construction of the UHE Serra da Mesa hydroelectric power plant, flooding 91 archaeological sites. Other power plants have been constructed along Tocantins River and the last one was UHE Peixe Angical. All the studies were hurried technical reports made by the so-called “contract archaeologists” for helping the contractor’s project approved. Once more society has been prevented from knowing its deeper roots. The problem is presented with archetypal lens where we have a look at the goddess Memory, Mnemosyne. Mnemosyne is the mother of psychology and origin of mythology, mother also of the Muses, fountains of the culture. Without Mnemosyne there is no Memory and no Art. Being daughter of Gaia, she re-connects us to the Earth, giving us back the feeling of deep ecology, demonstrating that the psyche is archaic and that psychology needs to turn its eyes, ears and nose to the outer world. All the article is weaved with the hinterland poems of Guimarães Rosa. The submersion of Pedra do Cruzeiro (Cross Stone) – America’s Roseta Stone is not only surprising, but appalling. Submerged or drown such treasures lies deep within our psyche. This was first published in Terra Brasilis – Pré-história e arqueologia da psique, SP: Ed. Paulus, 2006 and presented at XIX Moitará.
