CD RUMI HAFIZ CORA

CD RUMI HAFIZ CORA

by Luciana Aires Mesquita & Guilherme Vaz

Let the beauty we love be what we do.
Rumi

Review:

"This album is a selection of poems by thirteenth century Persian mystic poet Jelaluddin Rumi, and fourteenth century Persian mystic poet, Shams-ud-din Muhammed Hafiz with one poem by twentieth century Brazilian poet, Cora Coralina. They are read, in Portuguese translations, by Brazilian Artist/Mythologist Luciana Mesquita, in a setting of original music composed by Brazilian avant garde composer Guilherme Vaz. Don't be put off by the Portuguese renderings. This album offers a rich, deep, evocative, and meditative listening experience, brilliantly capturing the essential feeling of longing, for unity with the beloved, that is at the heart of the work of these three great poets. You may not consciously understand the words, but you will feel the power, at some deeper level, of their spiritual truths. Mesquita's readings have the expressive resonant throaty quality heard in the best Brazilian singers, and Vaz's striking music, featuring sparse percussion, plucked and bowed contra bass, muted trumpet, tinkling chimes, and various sound effects supports the texts with an inquiring, reaching, somewhat restless, but ultimately receptive ambience. The readings and the music together conduct an intense, yet relaxed and unhurried, slow-dance, taking up all the space, and more, needed to fully express the weight, depth and breadth these poems demand. The attractive twenty page booklet includes the Portuguese versions of all the poems with an English translation of the Cora Coralina poem."

Our next projects/Luciana Mesquita/Mitoludens:

Maize Poems Project.

I praise and love you as someone who lives in a state of grace with poetry…
your lyrics has the power an delicacy of natural things (…)
(Carlos Drummond de Andrade, in an open letter to Cora Coralina, 1975)

We aim to make a DVD and a symphony of the entire Maize Poem by Cora Coralina, a poet from Goiás (the city of Goiás is included in UNESCO list of Humankind Patrimony) using indigenous and traditional instruments from Central Brazil (GO, MT, PA), Peru, Central America and Navajo people. The musical themes should follow the myths which are intensely lived by the traditional people (e.g. Kayapo and Bakairi) who celebrate the corn in their traditional dances and rituals in Central Brazil. Peru has traditionally cultivated maize for 5,000 years. Their corn biodiversity is immense and ritualistically lived in its culture. Mexico has 8,000 year history of maize cultivation along with neighboring Honduras and Guatemala. Navajo people’s main ceremony is beautifully based on corn; their pollen rites of healing have the corn as the base of all cures. Although each culture has different rites and their own way to celebrate the meaning of each stage of corn growing and harvesting, all of them acknowledge the corn as the Amerindian seed that portray humility and peace throughout the Americas. This symphony shall symbolize the beautiful traditionally art work from the three Americas singing the same rite of peace. This project has already the approval of the Brazilian Government through the Lei Rouanet. It needs now financial help.

Hafiz Poems Project:

Together with Daniel Ladinsky we intend to record an entire CD on Hafiz poems. Also needs financial help.

Because of you,
late in winter
my heart is
a rose
in bloom.
